| Notes | By the time the Now compilations took off in the U.S. in 1999/2000, the British series was not only into its 44th volume, but it had expanded to two discs. That means, of course, that there were twice as many songs (42 on this album, to be exact), which means there was much more opportunity for filler. And, make no mistake, there is a fair amount of filler, especially for non-British or European listeners who will wonder what about half of the generic, albeit occasionally enjoyable, Euro-dance cuts are. Still, even with those lightweight tracks weighing down about half of the collection (most of them do arrive on the second disc), there are still enough good to great singles to make it a good bargain for listeners that want a fairly accurate portrait of Top 40 radio circa 1999/2000: Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time," Shania Twain's dance remix of "That Don't Impress Me Much," Lou Bega's "Mambo No. 5," Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," Geri Halliwell's "Mi Chico Latino," Robbie Williams' "She's the One," Mel C's "Northern Star," Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me," Texas's "Summer Son," Moloko's "Sing it Back," Supergrass' "Moving," Phil Collins' "You'll Be in My Heart," Backstreet Boys' "Larger Than Life," Jordan Knight's "Give It to You," and Enrique Iglesias' "Bailamos." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
