Chrono sent me this 2 months ago Embarassed Feel free to correct the English, we're not experts at this Wink Ice, if you want to write that up in another language, do it, but please make it clear what sentense is what... I'll have enough fun matching the English text to the German talking (which I don't understand Razz)

[Things in brackets are Chrono's comments.]

Bran Van 3000 – New Pop Festival Baden-Baden 1998

Narrator: SWR New Pop Festival with Bran Van 3000

1) Introduction by Stefanie Tücking

The following band was actually supposed to be a studio project. Some Canadian guy was looking for people with the ability and the will to play music. He found them and that’s the reason why there are like 25 different people on the record.
That’s way too much for our small stage – of course. When they realized that this project would become more popular than they ever imagined – they chose nine people to perform live. That is still a lot…well expect a mixture of hip-hop, trip-hop and ZZ Top.

From Montréal: Bran Van 3000!

(Cum On Feel the Noise)

2) Information about BV3 by Stefanie Tücking

James DiSalvio was originally a film-maker, a video director and a DJ. He shot a video for Branford Marsalis in New York and made 10.000$ with that.
Afterwards, he got his friend Electronic Pierre and entered the subway, which they left at the 42nd street to buy their first studio equipment. Then they decided to try it with music professionally.

(Ceci n´est pas une chanson)

4) More information about the band and an interview.

Narrator: Bran Van 3000 – that’s Canada’s most exciting music export at the moment.
BV3000 could mean something like a “Truck full of cornflakes” – but why the 3000?

Stéphane: “When we started, the band had like 3000 Canadian Dollars, which is about 15$”

Narrator: They are starting to get a well known reputation as a great live band. They even were the support for Massive Attack and Björk.
But that is of course not just their only quality: they are also great at sports – even on the Baden-Baden minigolf court.
Singer Stéphane contributes the “soul feeling”, but everyone can bring in their ideas into the band. Eventually, no one really dominates – really democratic, which benefits the music.

James: Then you have that story that you wanna get out, but it suddenly changes when we rehearse it – like when one of the girls sings it. Now we are more like a composing band…

Narrator: Their little unplugged gig at the festival lounge proves it: Bran Van 3000 are a band that love to perform live, so they play some tunes.

A visit to the record store: James and EP are walking music encyclopaedias. No wonder – they worked as DJs before and now they do the samples and arrangements for the band. Their music is full of various styles and different influences.
They are the centre of a new Canadian pop and dance scene, which was founded in Montréal.

James: “It’s amazing how much has changed in the last three years. But when things get difficult in politics and economy, things start to improve in music. I am happy that I am not a politician – at least not a Canadian one.

Narrator: BV3 are going to start their first big European tour. They also have a smash-hit: “Drinking in L.A”. And what’s it about?

Jayne and the band: “My life, maybe your life? Could be nobody’s life – if they are lucky!”

Narrator: No matter how you interpret them, their songs are absolutely party friendly.

5) Afrodiziak

6) Forest

7) Some old guy is translating his version of “Drinking in L.A.” in german. (Hilarious )

8 ) Drinking in L.A

9) Some info about the festival in general. Not really interesting but people praising themselves and shaking their balls…blabla.

10) Loop Me

11) In the record store

Narrator: A trip to the record store – what are they looking for?

James: “Nena!....”

Narrator: Then James discovers a real treasure:

James: They have “Let’s Do It Again” from Curtis Mayfield on CD! Can you play that one? I’m gonna buy that! I already got it as vinyl but not on CD. A very rare, rare Curtis Mayfield. I’ve been looking for that forever and now I find it here in Baden-Baden.
You got to hear the theme, turn it up please…a little bit like porn music. Imagine the strange things I could do with my hands…But Curtis is not singing that is Mavis Staples (no idea how you spell that).
German Punk compilation? Looks cool. But really cool would be that: German Punk and Boyzone – that would be BV3.”

Stefanie Tücking: “Your record company will pay – get it, no problem.”

James: “I will also take Boyzone. We are at war with them… (No need to translate this). Sorry, I don’t even know who they are…”

EP: “You know what I am looking for? Jethro Tull “Eccolon”. Don’t have it yet. There is something I have to sample from that one, a flute part that is really nice.

Narrator: A worthy trip – huge loot!
